about

Our 5th album. A collection of the last 6 months of our year long series of EPs. We hope you enjoy.

"A going concern since 2010, Grand Canonical Ensemble have managed to be commendably prolific and curiously elusive in their existence so far. One member, Josh Morris, lives in Cardiff; the other, Sam Bradwell, lives in Manchester. This has limited their live appearances, but not their creativity. The music they make, a celestial and drifting take on ambient drone-rock and the more deconstructed elements of the early 90s shoegaze 'movement', is the kind that can come together in piecemeal form, and thanks to the blessed wonder of filesharing doesn't even require its creators to meet up. "We don't see each other for months at a time, but that doesn't seem to matter," says Josh on their website. Starting in late 2010, GCE released (in digital form) an EP each month, inviting people to pay what they wanted. Near the end of this cycle, an American label called Meters and Miles hit the duo up for a cassette release; the result, Noson O Haf, actually used the format to its advantage by virtue of it's 90-minute length. It clearly struck a chord with GCE, and this month they have released another football match-sized tape out. "Sobrellevar", on Josh's Typical Stereo label, compiles their favourite parts of the last six month's worth of GCE EPs and reshapes them into two flowing halves. The results touch on the reverbed gauze of Cocteau Twins, Brian Eno's prototypical ambient work and the stuff Kranky Records released in the 90s, and it's both skilful and moving" - Buzz Magazine

“Give in to the delicate and melancholic guitar lines and just mong the hell out” - Miniature Music Press

"Despite being spread between Cardiff and Manchester, this duo has managed to be quite a prolific outfit. Fifth album Sobrellevar, released earlier this year, is a 90-minute ambient soundscape constructed from gentle atmospheric noise, delicate guitar lines and the occasional vocal. Live performances are hard to come by, but this cassette only release might well be the best way to experience their post-rock ideas." - thefourohfive.com/news/article/new-music-by-region-24
